What is a Charrette?
Our Discovery Goals
- Learn community needs and concerns from local experts
- Get an understanding of the character and different zones along Wilshire and La Cienega Boulevards
- Identify potential enhancements and design treatments that can be applied throughout the corridors
Monday, 6/22 – Thursday 6/25
Day 1: Monday, June 22
9 AM – 5 PM: Work Time
Our team of planners and designers met with city staff, reviewed the project area, and explored other corridors in the region that can inform our work.
5 PM – 7 PM: Opening Presentation and Discussion
We shared an overview of the project goals, schedule, and what we’ve learned so far about Wilshire and La Cienega Boulevards. This was an interactive presentation with small group activities and an opportunity for Q&A.
Day 1 Information and Summary
Thank you to everyone who joined us on Day 1 of the charrette! Our team spoke with members of the public at our Opening Presentation to hear about what’s important to you. The priorities we heard included finding ways to calm the noisy, fast traffic on Wilshire and La Cienega Boulevards to create unique, walkable neighborhoods, as well as finding ways to celebrate the city’s historic architecture. We also started getting to work researching different elements that could be incorporated into the streetscape based on your feedback. Our team is looking at the role the streets can play throughout the region and how Wilshire and La Cienega Boulevards serve the community.
Day 2: Tuesday, June 23
9 AM – 4 PM: Work Time
Our team conducted focus groups and started producing concept designs and recommendations for design guidelines.
4 PM – 5 PM: Mid-Charrette Update and Public Input
We shared an update on our progress since Day 1.
Day 2 Information and Summary:
On Day 2, we conducted focus groups to learn more about specific issue-based topics for the streetscape – things like hotel loading, business frontage, and alternative transit options. We focused our research around other similar streets and design concepts that work well and thought about what could be enhanced in the project area. In our Mid-Charrette Update and Discussion, we shared a preliminary set of comparisons and design inspirations from other streets you said you liked, and checked in to make sure our progress reflected your feedback.
Day 3: Wednesday, June 24
9 AM – 3 PM: Work Time
Our team continued meeting with stakeholders and producing designs and recommendations.
3 PM – 5 PM: Share and Brainstorm Design Ideas at our Virtual Open Studio
Our planners and designers created maps, drawings, and more based on what we’ve learned at the charrette.
Day 3 Information and Summary:
On Day 3, we continued our focus groups, getting input on potential design options like medians and curb extensions, as well as understanding community priorities for landscaping and street furniture. Our design team developed a series of illustrated ideas for the streetscape showing potential enhancements to the public right of way for Wilshire and La Cienega Boulevards based on the feedback we’ve heard throughout the charrette. We shared these preliminary concepts in our Open Studio for public feedback and refinement.
Day 4: Thursday, June 25
9 AM – 5 PM: Work Time
Our team synthesized everything we’ve learned throughout the charrette and finalized our design work to share with the public.
5 PM – 6:30 PM: Closing Presentation and Discussion
We shared the work completed during the charrette and the next steps for Connect Beverly Hills: Meet Me on Wilshire and La Cienega.
Day 4 Information and Summary:
For the final day of the charrette, our team drew up street cross sections and illustrations of potential treatments to consider for Wilshire and La Cienega Boulevards, including new sidewalk zones, street furnishings, medians, and crossing enhancements. We shared these ideas in our Closing Presentation and invited the public into our design workspace to give feedback on these concepts. .
